DESPITE fears about the weather, qualms about post-Covid attendance and last-minute cancellation of the bird and poultry section because of Avian Flu, it was a perfect day for Llanbister Show’s centenary on Friday, June 3.
The sun shone, people piled in and enjoyed what was described as the best variety of stalls, displays and activities for a long time at the event.
Honorary president Bill Rees formally opened the show with a welcome to the 100th anniversary, thanking everyone involved and wishing everyone a good time.
Among the many competitions were a horse and pony show and jumping, dog, sheep, small animals, children and adult art, crafts and produce and children’s races. Displays included bees, pygmy goats, rare Valais sheep, a black sow with piglets, a fairground organ and a nostalgia table with cuttings and photographs of past shows and village life.
The crowds were further treated to other entertainment, including the Cantorion ‘pop-up’ Choir’s rendition of the Hallelujah chorus, while there were bouncy castles, trade, craft and community stalls, a refreshment tent run by Cantal Young Farmers and a licensed bar.
Very successful and popular warm-up events during show week included a horse fun run, car treasure hunt and speed shearing contest.
Organisers expressed their thanks to all who supported and contributed in any way – from participants, programme advertisers, section organisers, show officers and general helpers, to sponsors and donors; particularly Garreg Lwyd Hill Wind Farm Community Fund for their grant towards additional marquees.
Organisers said: “We need more people to help plan, organise and co-ordinate in advance plus more general help on the day to ensure this long-running event will remain healthy for the next 100 years.”
