A beef farmer has revealed his shock to hear his original song featured in the opening episode of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.
John Hughes, started singing and writing songs again when he was 50 and used lockdown as an opportunity to share his music through social media whilst also playing at local pubs, clubs, and weddings.
John, from Meifod, near Welshpool, who is an avid Reds fan, said it was a surreal feeling when the Hollywood film crew descended on his farm following a call from the production team as he performed his original single, incidentally named ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.
John switched from dairy farming to sheep and cattle a decade ago, but one of his first real loves was music.
Around the same time, he held a party to celebrate his 50th birthday where he reunited with two of his former school band members; twins Mark and Iain Jones, which prompted a reunion which has meant John hasn't looked back since.
"I wanted to play the guitar again - I played as a kid, but I always wanted to get to a stage where I could write.
"Now to be doing gigs all over the place, it's great."
John has become something of an internet sensation with his original songs, the most popular of which received over 11,000 views as he sang about the wonders of Flintshire-based Ifor Williams Trailers alongside his loyal sheep dog, Poppy.
The guitar player added how pleased he was with the reception his music has received since featuring on the show: "It's a lovely feeling, just a shock. Knowing it's streaming in America, it's such a buzz at my age."
He added: “I’m known as the singing farmer. I wrote the song Welcome to Wrexham, and it’s featured on the opening part of the documentary.
“We filmed it on the farm with the documentary team – I hope the director’s cut includes me!
“It’s quite a shock to hear my voice singing my song on such a prestigious documentary about such a wonderful community club. I’m proud to be Welsh and I’m grateful to team Hollywood and Wrexham.
“Wrexham til’ I die.”
John’s song can be heard on the 2 minute 55 second mark of the opening episode which premiered to an incredible reception around the world.
Welcome to Wrexham is streaming now on Disney+ with episodes released every Thursday.
