A FAMILY-run business that has been a cut above the rest in Rhayader for more than 30 years has closed its doors.
Bob the Butcher, run by husband-and-wife team Bob and Marie Williams since 1988, brought the cleaver down on 34 years in business in the Radnorshire town last month, having served local residents since 1988.
Bob and Marie said it was with a heavy heart that they were leaving the West Street shop, which had been forced upon them due to ill health – although they confirmed it will still be run as a butchers and encouraged locals to get behind the new owners, who are set to open soon.
“We would like to thank our valued customers who have supported the business. Also, we would like to thank my catering customers for all their support,” the shop said in a post on its Facebook page.
“Our staff have given their all for our business and we will forever be grateful to them.
“Closing was not something we thought we would ever have to do and was destined to carry on till retirement age… but due to health issues this was never going to be possible.
“We have passed the business on to Jason and Lauren Watson who will be opening very soon. We hope you can give them your support in their new venture.
"Thank you once again – you all will be missed.”
The news attracted a litany of responses, prompting an update a few days later from the shop. “We would like to thank everyone for their lovely comments it's been a pleasure to serve the community, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
Rhayader Town Council posted on its Facebook page: “Rhayader Town Council would like to thank Bob the Butcher, his staff and family for the service they have given to the town's people since 1988.
“We wish him all the best as he retires, his staff all the best as they start new chapters and extend a big welcome to the new owners.”
Rhayader Carnival committee added: “Rhayader carnival committee would like to wish Bob and Marie all the luck for the future, we would also like to thank you for your support for Rhayader Carnival over the years.”
