PLANS to cease production at an Anglesey chicken factory are to move ahead, Welsh Government has confirmed.
Last month, the 2 Sisters Food Group revealed its plan to cease operations at its factory in Llangefni following a review of the company's UK poultry division.
The Welsh Government issued a statement that 2 Sisters Ltd will continue with these plans, despite widespread objections.
With 730 employees, Llangefni is one of the smallest factories in 2 Sisters’ poultry division.
A “taskforce” had been set up to support employees who will be affected by its closure.
Rhun ap Iorwerth, MS for Ynys Môn, called the move “heart-breaking”.
Mr ap Iorwerth said: “The statement from Welsh Government today confirms what became clear at the taskforce meeting a week ago, namely that 2 Sisters are not prepared to consider any option for saving their site in Llangefni.
“It's heart-breaking for everyone who works there and their families, and I think of them more than anyone.
“I can assure you that there is a determination to do everything possible to help them, to find employment of course, but also to cope with this blow in a time of hardship and during a cost of living crisis.
“I will be ready to help in any way of course, to be a voice for the work and the community and to ensure that the need for a significant response remains at the top of the agenda.”
