Woodhouse 2 Class Act 43914 from J and P Owens, Presteigne, took the day’s top price of 3,500gns at Ludlow for the Kerry Hill Society Sale on Saturday, 2nd September.

Having come through as male and overall champion in the pre-sale show under Bristol-based judge Alan Brimble of the Glenro flock, this shearling ram is by a Downwood ram and out of a homebred female by a Woodhouse ram. Taking this one all the way back to Inverurie in Aberdeenshire was Gemma Stewart, for her Kinbroon flock.

Next best in the shearling ram offering at 2,650gns was Plaish 43955 from F W Jones and Sons, Church Stretton, Shropshire. By a Crugiau ram, this one is out of a Penybont sired homebred female. Again, heading north, this one heads to L J Steen, Moffat, Dumfriesshire, for the Whitcastles flock.

Next up at 2,300gns was the best from Ceredigion-based Sion Jones’ pen with Fronarth Candyman 43987 catching the eye of D Morrison, Girvan, Ayrshire. By Dalwyn Zeus, this one is out of a Woodhouse 2 bred female by the Clayfield ram.

From the same pen was Fronarth Charlie Chaplin 43989, an ET-bred son of an Enfys ram out of a Whitcastles sired Woodhouse 2 female. Taking this one home at 1,600gns was J S Croose, Leominster, Herefordshire, for his Marlbrook flock.

Then selling for 1,520gns was the best from a strong run of sheep from Messrs Evans and Etheridge’s Lowlands flock, Tenby, Pembrokeshire. Lowlands 43973 is by the 4000gns Woodhouse 2 Arkle and is out of a homebred female by Woodhosue 2 41671. Taking this one back home to Knighton, Powys, was A F Beavan and Co.

At 1,400gns was another from Sion Jones’ pen in the form of Fronarth Carlos 43984. Again, by the Enfys ram, this one is out of a Pentrenant female carrying Reidstown bloodlines. This one was knocked down to G Myrset Davies, Crymych, Pembrokeshire.

Meanwhile at 1,350gns was the best from Jack Graham, who made the journey down from Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire with Birsca Captain 43760. By Whitcastles Angus, he’s out of Birsca Amber, a daughter of a Riggshield ram. He heads back north to Shotts, Lanarkshire, with Sophie McCarlie.

Two shearling rams then met a price tag of 1,000gns, the first being Woodhouse 2 Champion 43912, from the Owens family. By Dalwyne Zeus, this one is homebred on the dam side and caught the eye of Sion Jones for his Fronarth flock.

At the same money was Top Spot Capaldi 43581, an ET-bred son of Reidstown Rambo out of a Mowhaugh female from Angie Burgess, Dumfries, Dumfriesshire. The hammer fell to Gemma Stewart, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire.

Ram lambs met a top call of 1,350gns for the best from Jim Rowe and Tom Webb, Leominster, Herefordshire, in the form of Downwood Dynamite 44078. By Purclewan Callum and out of a homebred female by a Glenro ram, this one was a class winner at this year’s Royal Three Counties Show and heads across the water to Ballymena with Dale Wylie.

Next best in the ram lamb offering at 1,150gns was G W Roberts, Denbigh, north Wales, selling Pengwern Dai 44062. This Woodhouse 2 Bonanza sired lamb is out of a homebred female by a Overbuttergask ram and was knocked down to Andrew Fisher, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, for his Nidderdale flock.

At 750gns Jim Rowe and Tom Webb were back in action selling a half-brother to their ram lamb leader, Downwood Digby 44079 to J and S Hay, Birsay, Orkney.

Meanwhile, the reserve male champion, Crugiau Brynach from Mrs G Myrset Davies, Crymych, Pembrokeshire, then sold for 1300gns. By a Woodhouse ram this one is out of a homebred female by a Tysoe ram. He was knocked down to Anthony John and Family, Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire.

Female trade

Females were a somewhat selective trade with a top call of 750gns in the shearling ewe offering for Sion Jones’ leader from his Fronarth pen. This one is by an Enfys ram and out of a Woodhosue 2 female and sold to D W and S I P Jones, Trawsfynydd, Gwynedd.

Two females then shared a 650gns price tag, the first being an ET-bred Woodhouse 2 female from the Owens family by Dalwyne Avici. This one heads to Truro, Cornwall with J Wright.

The next at the same money was the female and reserve overall champion, Kingswater Cariann from Kate Esler and Ed Simmons, Kingston Seymour, North Somerset. By Kingswater Amazon and out of the Glenro-sired Kingswater Annabelle, this one joins previous buyer D Morrison, Girvan, Ayrshire.

Ewe lambs met a top call of 630gns for previous vendors Jim Rowe and Tom Webb with Downwood Divine selling to Andrew Fisher, Harrogate, north Yorkshire. Again, this one is by Purclewan Callum.

Next best at 600gns was the reserve female champion Top Spot Diamond from Angie Burgess. By the homebred sire Top Spot Boy Oh Boy, this one is out of a Grassknop daughter and sold to A Coad, Wadebridge, Cornwall.
