A cheese made in Llandovery has officially been named as the best in Wales!
Bryngaer Goats clinched the Best Welsh Cheese at the British Cheese Awards 2024, with Gafr Las, a soft blue cheese made of goat’s milk.
The cheese is matured for around a month to achieve a 'subtle medium blue flavour.'
Katie Head from Bryngaer Goats said: "I am so pleased to have been awarded Best Welsh Cheese for my blue goat’s cheese, Gafr Las.
"Bryngaer Goats was born from my passion for making something from scratch and my love of goats.
"I wanted to produce local cheeses made in small batches with individuality.
"It was just three years ago when I got my first goats, learnt to milk, and finally made cheese.
"I was stunned to receive the award after only starting the business last year.
"Thank you to everyone who has helped me, particularly fellow cheesemakers, my lovely customers and my very patient family."
The 28th British Cheese Awards happened at the Bath & West Showground, on March 22 where there were more than 600 entries from across the UK and Ireland.
The awards were a part of the new Bath & West Food & Drink Festival, an event that had a 63-member panel of cheese connoisseurs.
Notably, Snowdrop by Cote Hill in Lincolnshire seized the Supreme Champion trophy and Cashel Blue from Cashel Farmhouse Cheesemakers were named Reserve Champion, alongside Best Irish Cheese.
Best Scottish Cheese was claimed by Minger from Highland Fine Cheeses, and the Best English Cheese was awarded to Tor from White Lake Cheese.
The British Cheese Awards are organised by The Royal Bath & West Society.
It is also an opportunity for festival-goers to sample some of the entries at the Bath & West Food & Drink Festival, and even participate by voting in the People’s Choice Award.
